Communication between bees
Bees communication with one another in a number of ways like such as drumming feet, flapping wings like
a ‘dance’ and use of pheromones. The dance performed by the scout-bees is one way the bees to inform
each other of the location of food and how far away it is. There are several types of dances performed
by the bees, but the main ones of the all are the round dance & the waggle dance. The round dance is
performed by the honey bees that forage less than approximately 100.00 metres from the hive. Waggle dance is
performed to locate of the food source beyond 101 metres from the hive. The scout honey bees also perform a
characteristic of dance to locate the new home to which bees intend to swarm at the time of swarming.
The queen bee releases a substance called a “pheromone” which
serves the different functions. The pheromone enables her to identify members of the colony while entering in to the colony of her family members, to inhibit

or colony to move as cohesive unit, and to attract drones during the mating flights. The absence of the
queen substance (e.g. when the queen dies of the colony) produces the opposite responses, i.e. worker bees start begin to
develop ovaries and to build queen cells, and a swarm searching for accommodation will not be cluster
but will divide into smaller groups that cannot support the normal life of bee colony.
Colony decisions are taken by the collective behavior of bees within one colony sharing the same
odour, allowing guard bees to detect intruders in the colony.
